Miriam could only be thankful that Tim would be coming in the afternoon. That way, she didn’t have to be alone with Matt, something too dangerous for her self-control. Dealing with this morning’s events had been enough for one day.

Conversation bounced around the table during lunch as everyone seemed to react cheerfully to the fact that Liva Ann was out of their lives. And mostly, it seemed, that Matt didn’t care a bit about losing her.

The lively chatter proved to be a useful distraction for Miriam from those moments when Matt’s hand had encircled her wrist. His touch had gone right to her heart. Her breath had caught in her throat. Everything she thought she knew about herself turned upside down, and it still hadn’t righted itself. All she could do was hope that he hadn’t realized what was happening to her.

Miriam heard her name and surfaced, hoping no one realized she hadn’t been listening. Josh was speaking, and it seemed he’d asked her a question. She hadn’t the faintest idea what that question had been.

“There comes Tim,” he said, glancing toward the window that overlooked the lane. “I’ll ask him. He’ll know exactly how the ramp should be built.”

“You don’t need to.” Matt sounded as if he was trying to stop a flood with his bare hands. “I don’t want...”

He stopped, because no one was paying attention to him. Josh was getting up from the table and carrying his dishes to the sink. In a moment, Abel had followed him.

“I can stop by the lumberyard and get the planks you need,” Abel said. “It’s wonderful kind of you and your brothers.”

“There’s nothing the boys enjoy more than making a big mess building something,” Josh said.

Miriam had caught up with the conversation by now. Josh was determined to build a ramp off the porch for Matt, and his enthusiasm had pulled his brothers along on the project.

Josh grinned, turning from the sink. “Daad said he was sure he had enough planks for it. I’ll check with him and bring them over next time.”

Matt might as well save his breath, because it wouldn’t change Josh’s enthusiasm. Besides, she could see that Abel was just as eager. There’d be a ramp off the back porch before many days had passed.

Good. Matt would soon have no excuse not to join the world again.

Tim’s van had pulled up by the porch, and he was calling for someone to give him a hand. Josh hurried out, followed by Abel. In another moment, Betsy had scurried after them.

Clattering and banging came floating in from outside. Miriam decided that whatever they were doing, they had enough help, so she finished clearing the table. With an expression that said he was giving in to curiosity, Matt wheeled himself to the door where he could see.

“What is that thing? Miriam?”

She came to look over his shoulders at the unloading that was in progress, but she’d already figured it out. “Parallel bars. So you can get upright again.”

Miriam had turned to look at him when she spoke, and she couldn’t miss the expression on his face.
